"After many years of writing, Gustav Flaubert completed "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" in 1872 and his work refers to Anthony the Great, who lived as a hermit and ascetic in what is now Egypt until 356. According to legend, Anthony the Hermit was tempted by the devil in many forms, from demons to countless foreign deities and beautiful women. No wonder that these stories inspired countless painters - and also the poet Flaubert. His epic has always been a source of inspiration for many visual artists, including Odilon Redon (1888, 1889 and 1896), Hermann Lismann (1921), Lovis Corinth (1908) and Max Beckmann (1936/37)."
