Woodcut is an ancient technique that originated in the Far East and was made popular by Dürer. The easier-to-use linocut was only developed in the second half of the 19th century and was "ennobled" by artists such as Gauguin and Picasso. Susanne Haun shows how both techniques can be used to create striking illustrations at little cost using simple means, tools and materials. The key point is the transfer to paper from the wooden or linoleum printing block without a printing press. This can be done with ink or pressure rollers, with so-called hand rubs, but also with smooth-surfaced spoons made of wood or metal.
