Friedrich Nietzsche threw his arms around the neck of a hired horse in tears and refused to let go after he had to watch the driver beat the animal. Nietzsche felt such tremendous pain that he felt compelled to show his affection for the horse. This incident was followed by days of increasing madness - like a man possessed, Nietzsche wrote short and long letters and fragments of thoughts to friends and acquaintances, including to Cosima Wagner, whom he called Ariadne - so-called madness notes, which he signed with 'Dionysus' or 'The Crucified' or, for example, with 'Nietzsche Caesar'.

Susanne Haun first drew this event in sketches, then on watercolor cardboard and finally on a canvas measuring 80 x 60 cm for a drawing. In addition to the ink, she used a canvas covered with traces of memory.

This means that the lines that were placed on the canvas were primed again with acrylic.
